RVF is unique in its focus on creating sustainable public health development programs in low- and middle-income countries. All programs are designed in close cooperation with local health and governmental authorities and designed to become self-sustaining within 3-5 years of inception.

RVF does not create parallel structures. RVF works exclusively with local health care workers to build local capacity. This also helps pave the way to sustainability when RVF’s direct role in the program concludes.

Before RVF programs begin, the local health authorities commit fully sustaining the program politically and financially.
